| Name: | Chelatol - Apo-Lactoferrin 90 Caps Bottle |
| Function: | Lactoferrin is present in significant quantities (1 to 14 mg/ml) in milk, saliva, and tears and is offer protection against nasal colonization and infection by some bacteria. Lactoferrin is a 78-kDa single-chain glycoprotein folded into an N-lobe and a C-lobe. Each lobe contains one iron-binding site. Hololactoferrin (HLF) has one bound metal ion (usually Fe2+ or Fe3+) per lobe. Apolactoferrin (ALF) carries no metal ions, and therefore offers significant benefit in the removal of iron from the body in states of iron toxicity and/or hemochromatosis. |
| Most Useful For: | Due to this iron-binding mechanism, ALF can be considered an effective chelator of iron molecules, with additional antioxidative and immune-modulating functions. This is particularly useful in cases of iron toxicity and/or excess buildup, which can result in hemochromatosis or iron precipitation in the liver and brain. Iron accumulation has become a major health concern, especially in men, because the body tends to conserve iron and it becomes very difficult to eliminate it once accumulation occurs. |
| This product may have the following benefits: | ALF, but not HLF, can be bacteriostatic or bactericidal. The bacteriostatic activity of ALF is due in part to its iron chelating ability, which can deplete iron and restrict bacterial growth. ALF is also bactericidal against a wide range of bacteria. Since iron is a powerful oxidant causing significant cellular damage in the body, antioxidants can really only offer effective long term protection when they are accompanied by removal of the excess iron stores, which is where Chelatol offers a significant benefit from other forms of chelation.
